Jonathan Ashworth gets hit by camera equipment as his umbrella turns inside out during live interview

Shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth fell victim to the combination of blustery weather and live television as he was hit by falling camera equipment on Sophy Ridge’s Sunday show.

Mr Ashworth’s sentence was interrupted firstly by his umbrella turning inside out, and then an item of camera equipment falling on him.

“This is going to be one of those clips that will go viral, no doubt,” he said after the hiccup.

One of the coronavirus vaccines in development, the Pfizer/BioNTech jab, reported this week that it is 90 per cent effective.

But Mr Ashworth said he doesn’t think anyone should be “forced” to take a vaccine, and recalled the Vaccination Act of 1853 which led to “mass protest”.

His discussion of the subject was subsequently paused as he adjusted to the poor weather.

The Met office has warned that the UK is to face several days of wet and windy weather, with some areas being braced for winds of up to 60mph, and two flood warnings already in place across the country.

Some parts of the UK are to experience a month’s worth of rainfall in just the next few days.

On Twitter, Sophy Ridge described Jonathan Ashworth’s battle with nature as “politicians vs the weather” and said “It’s a wet and windy weekend for many – but even more for Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth as he battles inside out umbrellas and catches lights.”
