Labour’s shadow chancellor has warned that the UK could see “1980s levels” of unemployment due to the coronavirus pandemic, even with the new economic support measures announced by the government on Thursday.
Anneliese Dodds said she was concerned over whether the proposed wage support system offered enough incentives for employers to keep people in work.
It came after former prime minister Gordon Brown said Rishi Sunak needed to rethink his plans and “come back with a better budget for jobs”.
