The EU has given Boris Johnson a 20-day deadline to ditch plans to tear up elements of the Brexit withdrawal agreement or face possible legal action.
The European Commission said Brussels will “not be shy” in bringing court proceedings against the UK if the PM presses ahead with proposals which violate the Brexit withdrawal deal and endanger the Good Friday peace agreement in Northern Ireland.
The warning came after emergency talks in London between Commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic and Cabinet minister Michael Gove, demanded by Brussels after Mr Johnson’s shock announcement that he was tabling legislation to allow UK ministers to override provisions of the withdrawal agreement.
Mr Sefcovic told Mr Gove that the proposed new law amounted to an “extremely serious violation” of the agreement signed by Mr Johnson.
And he gave the UK until the end of this month to withdraw the measures.
