The French filmmaker Catherine Breillat has been exploring relationships between girls and older men since the 1970s. Her latest, “Last Summer,” flips the script.When the French director Catherine Breillat was 40, her then-husband and the father of her first child ended their relationship to be with a much younger woman. Soon after, Breillat started dating a man 12 years her junior.“Men want to repudiate their wives of a certain age by saying they couldn’t be loved by anyone anymore,” Breillat said in a recent video interview via an interpreter. “But for me that’s not true. Jonathan Tunick, Stephen Sondheim’s longtime collaborator, unveiled a grand orchestration of “A Little Night Music” that deserves more than a concert.Near the end of Stephen Sondheim’s musical “A Little Night Music,” the orchestra swells to what he is said to have called his Max Steiner moment, something out of “Casablanca” or “Gone With the Wind.”Désirée and Fredrik, former lovers who reconnect but nearly miss out on happiness again, come together and kiss. The instruments respond with a grand, emotive reprise of the show’s 11 o’clock number, “Send in the Clowns.”At a concert performance of “A Little Night Music” at David Geffen Hall on Thursday, the premiere of a new orchestration by Sondheim’s longtime collaborator Jonathan Tunick, the 53-piece Orchestra of St. Luke’s let out a fortissimo tutti. Strings and winds soared with the melody, but there was more: resonant, staggered chords to support it in the low voices, and florid counterpoint. It was a moment fit not only for the movies but for the opera house, which, perhaps, is where this new orchestration belongs.Not all musicals are fit for stages beyond Broadway, but some are. And there has been a resurgence, since Sondheim’s death in 2021, of large-scale revivals of his work. (This, after years of skillfully stripped-down productions by John Doyle.) “Sweeney Todd” returned to Broadway with Tunick’s original orchestration for nearly 30 players, crackling with detail and musical drama. Last week, “Follies” was presented at Carnegie Hall with a similarly sized ensemble and a starry cast in concert.The version of “A Little Night Music” on Thursday had nearly double those forces. If anyone can be trusted with that task, it’s Tunick. The US supreme court has narrowed the statute that prosecutors have relied in the cases over hundreds of rioters who took part in the January 6 Capitol attack for obstruction of an official proceeding – in a ruling with profound implications for hundreds of other participants on that day in 2021.The 6-3 ruling in the case of Fischer v United States could also affect the federal criminal case against Donald Trump, who is charged with similar offences in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the assault. United States, 522 U. S. 23, 29 (1997)). And “[w]here Con-
gress includes particular language in one section of a stat-
ute but omits it in another section of the same Act,”” we
generally presume that Congress did so intentionally. Rus-
sello v. United States, 464 U. S. 16, 23 (1983) (quoting
United States v. Wong Kim Bo, 472 F. 2d 720, 722 (CA5
1972) (per curiam)). The Court’s reasons for departing from
these rules are thin.

The Court begins with the noscitur a sociis and ejusdem
generis canons. Ante, at 5. The noscitur canon counsels
that “words grouped in a list should be given related mean-
ings.” A. Scalia & B. Garner, Reading Law §31, p. 195
(2012) (internal quotation marks omitted). It is particu-
larly useful when interpreting “a word [that] is capable of
many meanings.”” McDonnell v. United States, 579 U. S.
550, 569 (2016) (quoting Jarecki v. G. D. Searle & Co., 367
U. S. 303, 307 (1961)). See, e.g., Gustafson v. Alloyd Co.,
513 U. S. 561, 573–575 (1995) (employing the canon to in-
terpret “communication” in the statutory list “prospectus,
notice, circular, advertisement, letter, or communication””).
The ejusdem canon applies when “a catchall phrase” follows
“an enumeration of specifics, as in dogs, cats, horses, cattle,
and other animals.” Scalia & Garner §32, at 199. We often
interpret the catchall phrase to “embrace only objects simi-
lar in nature to those objects enumerated by the preceding
specific words.” Circuit City Stores, Inc. v. Adams, 532 U. S.
105, 115 (2001). See, e.g., Washington State Dept. of Social
and Health Servs. v. Guardianship Estate of Keffeler, 537
U. S. 371, 375, 385 (2003) (employing the canon to construe
the general term in the statutory list “execution, levy, at-
tachment, garnishment, or other legal process””).
These canons are valuable tools. But applying either to
(c)(2) is like using a hammer to pound in a screw-it looks

He discusses that day, the war in Ukraine and the challenges facing Russian artists today.On the night of June 29, 1974, after a performance with a touring Bolshoi Ballet troupe in downtown Toronto, Mikhail Baryshnikov made his way out a stage door, past a throng of fans and began to run.Baryshnikov, then 26 and already one of ballet’s brightest stars, had made the momentous decision to defect from the Soviet Union and build a career in the West. On that rainy night, he had to evade K.G.B. agents — and audience members seeking autographs — as he rushed to meet a group of Canadian and American friends waiting in a car a few blocks away.“That car took me to the free world,” Baryshnikov, 76, recalled in a recent interview. “It was the start of a new life.”His cloak-and-dagger escape helped to make him a cultural celebrity. “Soviet Dancer in Canada Defects on Bolshoi Tour,” The New York Times declared on its front page.But the focus on his decision to leave the Soviet Union has sometimes made Baryshnikov uneasy. He said he does not like how the term “defector” sounds in English, conjuring an image of a traitor who has committed high treason.“I’m not a defector — I’m a selector,” he said. “That was my choice.
